John Cage Organ Project
A glimpse of infinity
This is a journey that began in Halberstadt, the birthplace of mordern music. The first organ with the contemporary key layout still used in the present day was installed here back in 1361.
The project first asked the question: how slow ist "as slow as possilbe"? This arose from the tempo instructions "as slow as possible" stipulated by John Cage for his piece ORGAN²/ASLSP. At the turn of the millennium, Halberstadt came up with its own answer: 639 years, in tribute to the construction of the first modern organ 639 years before the project's start date.
The new question is: will the final note really sound in the year 2639? This crazy and innovative project is a world first that provokes considerations of the triangle of space, sound and time and offers a glimpse of infinity.
